Pirelli start Season 2011 Testing under lights !

Abu Dhabi’s Yas Marina circuit witnessed a Formula 1 first on Monday night as Pirelli tested its new wet tyre compounds on an artificially wet track under floodlights.
Having conducted its previous test sessions in the second half of last year with its dry tyre compounds, F1’s new tyre supplier is using its final private session before the start of pre-season testing to work on its intermediate and wet-weather compounds.
On Monday evening the Italian firm spent the six hours before midnight running under the lights at Yas Marina, with the track having been doused with water to simulate the kind of wet conditions likely to be experienced at various races during the season.
Pedro de la Rosa carried out the running in the Toyota TF109 Pirelli has used for all of its private tests, with the Spaniard to repeat the same programme on Tuesday night as the tyre firm aims to rack up more than 1,000km in the demanding track conditions.
Pirelli’s F1 director Paul Hembery explained the decision to run in the unique conditions, saying: “This is a unique opportunity to witness a Formula 1 test car on track at night in the wet and on hot tarmac, in an entirely floodlit setting.

“We decided to do it this way because we want to challenge our rain tyres with the most difficult and demanding of all situations. And who knows, perhaps it could be a good idea for a future grand prix? “These tests will provide us with useful information to finalise our tyre development process for Formula 1. “It is seven months since we started developing our tyres and five since we started with the actual testing. “We are very satisfied with the results so far and we have also collected very positive feedback from the teams.” Although F1’s teams sampled the in-development Pirelli rubber in the post-season Abu Dhabi test last November, the start of pre-season testing in Valencia on February 1 will be the first time teams have been able to run the 2011 compounds on their cars for the new campaign. “Soon it will be time to get started in Spain where the first official test of the season will take place,” Hembery added. “We will use this opportunity to gather more feedback from teams and drivers and be ready for the Bahrain Grand Prix in March.”

Powered by Bruno at 08:51 <a class='comment-link' href='https://www.blogger.com/comment/fullpage/post/3117460012717640302/8360504386311883737' onclick='javascript:window.open(this.href, "bloggerPopup", "toolbar=0,location=0,statusbar=1,menubar=0,scrollbars=yes,width=640,height=500"); I've just returned from a skiing trip to France and used so many muscles that even my fingers ache. Mind you, I've promised my wife Harriet a six-pack as a New Year's resolution for the past few years so maybe it's actually the perfect start to 2011!
It may only be January but another F1 season will be upon us before we know it - and judging by the tweets I've been receiving it can't come soon enough for lots of you! There's a lot going on and you might have read about changes to the BBC team - I'll come onto those in a bit.

But there is no doubt that since taking this job it feels as though my life has has entered a warp-speed stage. I look at the calendar ahead of the season and feel rather daunted by the travel, the hours of live television, the garish Eddie Jordan outfit and the drama that awaits us... but before I know it, we'll be at the final race of the year with the champion crowned.
The winter break is the same. Knowing when the season starts meant that even before we signed off in Abu Dhabi we had already announced how many weeks it was until the 2011 season. So I've spent most of the winter (in between sore throats/colds/flu) ticking off the weeks until we're back in Bahrain.
I can't believe it's time to turn our attention towards Sebastian Vettel's defence of his crown already.

Coulthard (right) will dove-tail his pundit's role with his new commentating duties. Photo: Getty

I vividly remember coming off air in November, having signed off from the final F1 Forum of 2010, and immediately feeling really down. I mentioned it to Martin Brundle, who told me that it's par for the course. After giving so much both mentally and physically to a gruelling nine-month schedule, it's natural that you experience a dip the moment the adrenalin leaves your body and the slog is over.
Mind you, my dip wasn't quite as big as Ferrari's, was it? I'm sure over the winter you've read the revelations that team principal Stefano Domenicali considered walking away after the Scuderia's strategy calls contributed to Red Bull's double success. Well, to understand what Domenicali must have been feeling, you need to realise how much emotion is involved in a sport more famed for its technical element.
Many of the Red Bull engineers and mechanics have worked for that team throughout all the name changes, back-of-the-field struggles and double retirements they have experienced in less successful years, so you can imagine the outpouring of joy that greeted Vettel's title in Abu Dhabi. And from men who spend their days in the macho world of racing there were plenty of tears as the best partiers in the paddock lived up to their reputation of working hard and playing hard, too.

As I left them to their celebrations, I walked into the pit lane and looked along the garages, where I was met with the clearest example of what suspect calls on the pit wall can lead to.
Right next door to the loud music and joy emanating from the Red Bull garage, there was just one lonely mechanic standing and talking on the phone in a still, silent Ferrari garage.

The money they'd spent, the car they'd devoted thousands of hours to, the flights they'd taken and the dreams they'd had eventually came to nothing. The car was now obsolete, the season over and all because of one split-second decision on the pit wall. That is what makes this such a fascinating sport.
I think we all felt a bit odd at the end of the season. Imagine how it was for our own former Red Bull driver David Coulthard, seeing the team you raced for achieving the ultimate success. He must have had all sorts of emotions.
You'll get the chance to hear for yourself next season just how emotional grand prix racing makes David because, as well as chasing around the paddock with Eddie and me, he is stepping up into the commentary box.
I'm really excited about a 13-time winner sharing his knowledge in the race with you. Remember, David has raced most of the guys on the grid, has first-hand experience of the inner workings of current champions Red Bull and, most importantly, has driven contemporary F1 machinery.

There is no doubt that it is a daunting prospect for him but I think he will fly once he settles in. I always tell him that the pre- and post-race "waffle", as I jokingly refer to it, is important and an interesting way of adding depth to a race weekend. However, we don't directly affect people's enjoyment of the actual racing.
In my mind, the commentary is a somewhat more responsible role for that reason and is also the trickiest job going. I wouldn't swap the pit lane for the commentary box for all the sand in Bahrain!
Although David is moving to the commentary box, the 'three-o' of myself, DC and EJ will remain. We love working together and, when you get an on-screen chemistry that people seem to enjoy, it would be foolish to break it up.
However, David will need to hustle his white jeans to the commentary box a little earlier so immediately pre- and post-race will be a chance for EJ to get on his soap box and share his views at a time when the audience is joining us in their droves for the racing.
The most fascinating part of any race weekend for me has always been settling down to watch the grand prix with Eddie and David as they discuss the race unfolding while regaling me with anecdotes of their first-hand experience. Well, I won't get that anymore but my loss is certainly your gain and I think we've a really strong team in place for 2011.

And who will be alongside David in the box? His long-time friend, one-time business partner and full-time expert on the sport - Martin Brundle.
Martin has had more races behind the microphone than behind the wheel - and what better qualifications can you have than to have taken part in the sport for so long, commentating on almost every race for the past 14 years? I thought in 2010 his instincts, ability to read the race and general enthusiasm for the sport he has dedicated his life to were as prevalent as ever.
I don't envy the work that lies ahead for Martin, though. It might seem like a small change on paper but, in reality, while DC will be sharing his views on drivers, strategy and taking us as close to the cockpit as possible, Martin will need to be aware of every little story, political development and technical development as he calls the action. Racing drivers only exist to be the best, so expect to see him giving it his all to make it a huge success.

Clearly, however, the changes I've talked about mean that Jonathan Legard will no longer be part of our team - I know I'm going to really miss him.
I first met 'Ledgy', as we affectionately call him, at Craven Cottage, where we were both covering football. It was November 2008 and we had both been lined up for the new F1 season. We got talking and were both brimming with excitement and anticipation about the adventure ahead.
I remember before the 2009 season started and we were both incredibly nervous about taking on something as important and prestigious as F1 and I told him how worried I was about the challenge ahead. His instant reply was: "We can both either have an easy life or an exciting life and I know which one I want!"
That is typical Jonathan - always encouraging, incredibly enthusiastic, a good friend to us all, and without doubt the hardest working member of the BBC's F1 team, doing an incredibly difficult job. I know I speak for every member of the production when I say we're all going to miss his entertaining company and his absolute dedication to the job. All the best for the future Jonathan!

One thing you may well also miss is standard-definition coverage. Finally, we are delighted to bring you F1 in high definition, which I think will make the sport even more dramatic and addictive than ever.
So why will you miss SD? Well, mainly because in HD I think Eddie's shirts might be un-viewable. I've warned him, but I'm still expecting something outrageous come March!
So, the clock is ticking for the new season and March will be here in a flash. We have a new Indian driver, a new Indian Grand Prix, the prospect of three British drivers battling it out if Scottish DTM champ Paul di Resta gets the nod at Force India, six world champions on the grid... and once again the whole season will be live and uninterrupted of the BBC.
I can't wait to share the 2011 season with you all. text-align: center;">

UBS and Formula 1™ today announced that they have signed an agreement for UBS to become a Global Partner of Formula 1™. The partnership will be formally launched at the 2010 FORMULA 1 SINGTEL SINGAPORE GRAND PRIX, which runs from 24 to 26 September, 2010.

The agreement follows a comprehensive evaluation by UBS of the commercial benefits of all global sponsorship properties. Formula 1™ is a year round, highly visible, and popular sport with an especially strong presence in many of UBS’s key growth markets such as Asia, Middle East and Latin America. The long-term partnership will provide excellent branding and hospitality opportunities that fit with UBS’s global footprint and business strategy.

Key benefits of the partnership include;
- Global reach: currently 19 events in 18 countries on 4 continents
- Growth markets: Formula 1™ is present and growing strongly in strategically important markets for UBS such as Asia, Middle East and Latin America
- Brand awareness: global television audience in 2009 of more than 520 million people across 187 countries; making Formula 1™ one of the most-watched annual sports in the world
- Client entertainment: fascinating opportunities for key client hospitality across the globe
- Year round presence: Formula 1™ season lasts eight months of the year

Oswald Grübel, UBS Group Chief Executive, said:“UBS has been searching for a global sponsorship platform that has appeal to our clients, promotes our brand globally and makes good commercial sense. Our new partnership with one of the largest and most popular sporting organizations in the world will fulfil all these criteria, and it constitutes a key element of our newly launched branding activities. The global reach of F1™ complements the many local activities we support."

Bernie Ecclestone, Group CEO of Formula 1™, said:“UBS is a global company where performance, teamwork and superior execution are integral to their clients’ success. These values complement those of Formula 1™ and I’m delighted to welcome UBS to Formula 1™.”

In line with all commercial contracts, the financial terms of the agreement will not be disclosed by UBS or Formula 1™. Commercial attractiveness was however a key consideration for UBS and the agreement compares favourably with other forms of brand awareness and client hospitality.

Powered by Bruno at 16:22 1 Drivers comments

Labels: F 1, F1 news, Singapore GP, UBS

Monday, June 14, 2010

Hamilton wins Montreal GP

Tire gamble pays off as Brit captures Formula One race in Montreal

Pole sitter Lewis Hamilton didn’t think it was a gamble for his McLaren Mercedes team to start Sunday’s Formula One Canadian Grand Prix on softer option tires.
Few believed him, but at the end of 70 laps at Circuit Gilles Villeneuve it was Hamilton and his McLaren Mercedes team that held all the aces and the giant’s share of the pot from F-1’s only visit to this side of the Atlantic Ocean.
He crossed the finish line a full 2.2 seconds ahead of teammate Jenson Button to give the British-based team a 1-2 result.
Hamilton was 9.2 seconds in front of third-place finisher Fernando Alonso in a Ferrari.
Sebastian Vettel, who before the race had criticized McLaren’s decision to run the Saturday qualifying laps on the option tires, was fourth for Red Bull with teammate Mark Webber rounding out the top five.
To many among the 110,000 sold-out crowd at the Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, however, it looked early on as if Hamilton had lost his gamble when he pulled into the pits under green flag conditions to change to the harder compound tires after just eight laps.
But as the race wore on Hamilton reeled in first Vettel, then Webber, then Alonso to take control. It marks the second win in Canada for the 25-year-old Hamilton.
The victory also lifted Hamilton to the top of the world championship with 109 points, three ahead of Button and six ahead of Webber, who had held the lead going into the Canadian GP.
Hamilton called his win the toughest of his career.
“It was the toughest race I’ve ever been in,” he said. “We had great pace all the way through but we had to fight traffic all the way as well. So far this season, I would have to say it was the ultimate challenge.”
There was one moment, however, that could have ruined Hamilton’s day. On exiting after his first pit stop, he came close to locking wheels with Alonso.
“On our in-lap to change tires, I was ahead of Alonso but he had some problems and ended up coming out beside him,” he said.
“He was in my blind spot, but he managed to race us to the end of pit lane and got out in front of us.”
From that point on, Hamilton said, the race was hard fight for every turn on every lap. But he added, the hard fighting made his win all the more satisfying.
“It has been a tremendous weekend, it has been fantastic,” Hamilton said. “I got here on Wednesday and things have gone so well. I’ve had incredible support from the fans.”
Button, the defending F-1 champion, heaped praise on his younger teammate, calling his race phenomenal.
“This guy (Hamilton) was phenomenal,” Button said. “It is good to finish close to (him) and good to get some points.”
Alonso complained, however, that it was the traffic, and not Hamilton’s faster McLaren Mercedes that cost him the victory on Sunday.
“We went from getting 25 points (for the win) to 15 points (for third) because of traffic,” he said.
“Ferrari is moving in the right direction but today we kept being held up (by back markers).”
Late in the race — on Lap 62 — the McLaren engineers were urging Hamilton to ease up in order to save his tires, which were beginning to show some severe wear.
But on the very next tour of Circuit Gilles Villeneuve’s 4.61 km loop Hamilton responded with a time of one minute, 18.025 seconds — the fastest lap of the day of any of the 2X starters on the grid.
With three laps to go he had increased his lead over Button to 3.5 second before finally heeding his team’s pleas to lift of the gas, at least a little bit.

By DEAN MCNULTY

Powered by Bruno at 12:54 0 Drivers comments

Labels: Canadian Grand Prix, F1, F1 news, Ferrari, jenson Button, Lewis Hamilton, vodafone McLaren

Friday, June 11, 2010

Lewis Hamilton relishes Canadian GP

Lewis Hamilton sat shivering in an air-conditioned tent on a rainy, chilly day at Montreal's Circuit Gilles Villeneuve.
"I hope the weather improves," the McLaren star said Thursday, a day before the Formula One cars hit the track for practice for Sunday's Canadian Grand Prix.
Hamilton, coming off a victory two weeks ago in Turkey, won the 2007 race in Montreal for his first Grand Prix victory.
"I love it here," Hamilton said. Seb got the better of it but it could have gone either way. Great result for the team, we executed a beautiful weekend."
It was a first one-two for Red Bull since the final race of the 2009 season, the team finally getting their reward for consistently being the fastest car on the grid this season.
A broken spark plug did for Vettel in Bahrain and the German had a wheel failure in Melboune, while Webber's engine failed during Friday's practice session for this grand prix.
But they had no such problems on race day at the Sepang Circuit as both cars cruised problem-free and untroubled to the flag.

"I realised straight away I had a good start, I was able to gain, gain, gain and I had a good advantage," said Vettel. "I took the chance into Turn One, it was very late but I took it.
"It's good that we can fight each other but you should keep the respect and I am glad that we have done that, I am sure Mark would do the same as I did.
"After that we had the same pace but I was able to stay in front. We had a magnificent car - I just had to watch the pace and look after the tyres.
"It was a very good result for us especially after two races where we didn't finish where we wanted to be. It was important to stay relaxed and not panic so I am really pleased for me and the team."
The strategic errors made by Ferrari and McLaren during Saturday's rain-affected qualifying meant Alonso and Massa started 19th and 21st respectively, with Button and Hamilton 17th and 20th.
But while Vettel was busy passing Webber on Turn One, all four were making moves of their own and Hamilton, in particular, seemed to be picking off victims at will.

The 2008 champion, along with both Ferraris, was one of the few drivers to start the race on hard tyres but the call paid off as all three put themselves in strong positions.
Reigning champion Button had been sent out on soft tyres but pitted on lap nine for the hard variation and instantly began to hunt down his rivals with several new fastest laps.
Ferrari seemed to be gambling on pre-race forecasts of heavy rain coming to fruition because they kept their drivers out on the hard tyres while most other teams were bringing their men in for a fresh set.
The Italian team's plight was not aided by Alonso's car developing a broken clutch, which produced awkward down-shifts and made braking into the corners tricky and overtaking near-impossible.
With the likes of Rosberg, Kubica and Sutil, who secured an excellent fifth-place finish for Force India, maintaining the pressure up front with some scintillating laps, Ferrari and McLaren acted.
Hamilton stopped for soft tyres on lap 31 and Alonso was the final man to pit on 37, but Hamilton could not make it past Sutil and Alonso's broken clutch put paid to his chances.
The game was up for the Ferraris and McLarens, Button producing increasingly slow laps on ageing tyres and Alonso seeing his engine blow on lap 55 after trying to pass the world champion.

There was more disappointment for Michael Schumacher as the seven-time world champion retired on lap 10 after a nut dislodged itself from the rear left wheel of his Mercedes.
"I lost a wheel nut basically so there was no more drive left," the German, who had climbed from eighth to sixth when he was forced off, told BBC Radio 5 live. "It's very unusual for us to have a reliability problem.
"We were in good position I was pacing myself, and although it is a long race it was all looking OK."
However, Rosberg was understandably delighted to have secured a first podium finish with his new team since joining from Williams.
"It's a great feeling to be back up on the podium again," he said. We just have to see what happens over the next few races.
"But if it's not going in the right direction, then people have to start making the decisions. I hope it gets better, for all of our sakes."
Button's McLaren team-mate Lewis Hamilton agreed that the first race was "very dull" but predicted more action when the season resumes in Australia on 28 March.
"You've got to assume the next race will be more exciting," he said. "There will be more people and there should be more of an atmosphere in Australia, as there always is.
"The track should be more favourable to the cars. To which the reply in (suddenly) very deep voices is "no, no, no".
And that was the way it was in Bahrain (ironically). And will be later in the season.
Everyone wants to join in a jolly good stoning, Later in the year when it has all panned out the nay-sayers will put on their deep voices and nod sagely.

After a single race large sections of the sport are reacting like Chicken Licken, claiming the sky is falling in on F1, Armageddon is, apparently, upon us. It's all over.
Suddenly Bernie Ecclestone's phone is burning red hot as those with little faith, and less intelligence, turn to the sport's messiah for comfort and redemption, afraid their fragile little houses are all about to collapse.
It's all hyperbole of the most ridiculous kind.

Yes, Bahrain was boring, perhaps the most boring starts to the season I have seen in years.
But the key word there is not "boring" but "start".
Before the opening race we all talked of a new dawn and now we are disappointed the dramatic changes have not provided the silver bullet to all the sport's woes.

One sage, who should know better, even decided to blame Max Mosley, the ex FIA president.
Apparently he alone is responsible for the fact that the race in Bahrain was an utter failure.
Very helpful and very F1: blame the one person no longer involved.

So what's to be done?Well the answer is complicated. As usual, at the most basic level, some teams did a great job and others didn't do their homework so well.
Red Bull are obviously on to a winner, Ferrari too.
They are well ahead of the rest but that could just be at circuits with lots of medium and slow speed corners.
Well done, incidentally, to Nick Heidfeld, who in isolation was able to spot the qualities of the Red Bull racers so absolutely.
McLaren have the edge on the long straights thanks to their Hokey-Kokey design but lack downforce in the twistier sections.
The one second gap between Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton is concerning but they are still in the game.
Mercedes haven't had the rampant start they had hoped for but then they suspected as much after the Barcelona test.
A few last minute bolt-ons added in the two weeks before Bahrain and a secret run-out at an airfield in England were supposed to get them back in the game.
It didn't, but Ross Brawn is too smart to stay second (third? fourth?) for long.
On a personal note that means Herr Schumacher is going to have to fight for any glory that comes his way rather than be handed it on a plate (aka 2000-2004).
And if that continues will he carry on racing or retire (again)?

The reality overall is that, as usual, the sport expected too much, too soon.
Over the years there have been too many changes in direction, too many last minute additions and subtractions.
The double-diffuser, mass dampers, KERS, active suspension, grooved tyres, narrower tyres, slicks and points changes to name but a few.
The sport is not in crisis despite what some say - but what it should stop doing is lurching from one set of changes to the next.
Stop living on a procession of knee-jerk reactions hoping radical change year on year will suddenly yield the ultimate conclusion.
It might. But the chances are it won't.

Bernie Ecclestone is right in one sense. The teams have to be taken out of the equation.
Let them SUGGEST changes, be involved in the evolution and discussion but only have the power to make SUGGESTIONS and not have a final say or a power of veto in the shape of things to come.
My good friend Giorgio Piola, who really does know more than a thing or two about the details of car design, suggested that a former designer should be appointed in making the rules and governing the sport.
Race director Charlie Whiting is really a man with his finger in a giant dike these days, trying to regulate the widest imaginings of more than 300 designers.
Piola suggests the help of someone like John Barnard, an ex McLaren and Ferrari designer, responsible for some of the most beautiful F1 cars ever built.
I think he's got a point.
Ex world champions (Prost, Hill, Mansell, Fittipaldi for example) are finally being bought in to help race day stewards, so what about a designer for the governing body to assist the likes of Charlie and Peter Wright?

But more to the point; what is specifically wrong this season?

Firstly, as I said, it's a new era, new rules and, as always with change, some teams get it right and some get it wrong.
But the differences will narrow with every passing Grand Prix.
McLaren and Jenson Button, for instance, were too conservative in the race.
They believed the tyres would not just degrade slowly but fall off a cliff once the rubber was spent.
Actually, they believed their own PR: play it smooth and the race will come to you. Sadly, it didn't.
I'm not sure how they got it so badly wrong because those on the other side of the same garage thought differently.
And team bosses have one thing right, too; there needs to be talks with Bridgestone to create a tyre that will last, perhaps, 10 or 15 laps and not the entire distance.
Bridgestone are understandably concerned what it might do to their reputation if commentators talk of exploding and worn out tyres so they have created something that lasts. It's a thorny issue, especially in an age when F1 already faces a dilemma with no tyre supplier for 2011.
My feeling is that Bridgestone will stay and teams start paying for what they use rather than getting it for free.
In plain terms we want a 'rubbish tyre' formula; but what tyre manufacturer would be willing to get involved in that?

And perhaps ban pit stops altogether too. Or require them to be a minute long as a penalty for wearing out your rubber.
That would encourage drivers to race on worn out rubber, see the cars slip sliding, pilots sawing at the wheel, the back jumping out, struggling out of control, a wild race machine on the limit of its capability.

Full tanks is the answer too. Definitely.
Regardless of what the nay sayers cry. Calling for mandated second stops, in my opinion, is not an option. That would be a return to 2009 and the era of the fabricated show.
We need F1 racing, Not a return to F1 chess. Now that pit stops are reduced to a minimum keep it that way.
Pit stops are fake drama, a way of turning the focus to the pits because the racing doesn't cut it on the track.
It would be like turning the focus of a stage show to the way the scenery is changed just because the acting is rubbish.
Directors don't double the amount of scene changes - THEY IMPROVE THE ACTING.

Ultimately the truth is that if we took today's 24 drivers and put them in 24 Formula Fords, Formula Firsts, or even Fiestas the entertainment would dramatically improve.
So the problem in this case is not the drivers but the cars and the circuits.
And it's painfully evident that every time the rules are changed you move away from the ideal of close racing.

Change creates extremities; big winners and big losers.

It takes years to get close to parity again and before it does the rules change once more.
Yes we need change - but we need to be thinking now about 2015 as well as 2011. Build a car now according to the 2015 rules, test it and report back to the FIA.Not do as we did this year and the last and the one before that.
Finalise the rules eight months before the first race and wonder why those with all the money come out on top.
These days, thanks the extent of the media attention as turned F1 into a knee jerk formula and that has to stop.
Somewhere along the line we need to take Chicken Licken out the back and put her in front of a firing squad.
Yes, we may have a problem this year but wait until Spain to make a final ruling.
The real problem is not the next race, the current season or the next one. It's the whole way rule-making is approached.
Change the way regulations are decided and you automatically alter the results you get.
Don't start from what we've got and how to make it better. It may take some races but it will be better."
Prost, who is second in the all-time winners' list behind Michael Schumacher, was known as 'The Professor' during his career for his intelligent approach to racing, which helped him secure many victories.
After a few races, I am sure the good drivers, the top drivers, will like it
Alain Prost
The 55-year-old said the refuelling ban would have the same effect as it did during his career, in that it would favour drivers able to think about their racing.
The challenge drivers now face is managing their cars through the difficult early stages of the race, when pressing too hard while the car is heavy with fuel can destroy the tyres.
Prost did not want to say which drivers he thought would benefit, but is convinced all the leading drivers would come to appreciate the change.
"They have got used to a sprint - in free practice, qualifying, race. And having 60kg of fuel or 10kg makes no difference," he said.
"When you start with 160kg you have to think differently, and they are not used to that.
"After a few races, I am sure the good drivers, the top drivers, will like it."
But Prost said he would change the rules covering the use of tyres in races.
Currently, all drivers have to use both of the two types of available tyre during the race, while drivers who make the top-10 qualifying shoot-out have to start the race on the tyres with which they set their fastest time.
"If it was my decision," he said, "I would have left the freedom about the tyres - you have one soft, one hard and freedom.
"(It would be) exactly the same - you start the race with the tyres you qualify with but after that freedom. If you want to use only soft tyres, or only hard tyres, (in the race) you do what you want."

Andrew Benson - BBC Sports

Powered by Bruno at 22:09 0 Drivers comments

Labels: F 1, f1 fans, F1 news

Thursday, February 25, 2010

Can Stephan GP make it to Bahrain ??

Stefan GP expecting entry confirmation within a week

Stefan GP boss Zoran Stefanovic is expecting to know in a week's time whether his team will be on the grid for the season opener in Bahrain.
With US F1 looking less and less likely to make the first race, Stefan GP is hoping to be granted a position on the official entry list instead. The team has a Toyota-based chassis and engine ready to run and Stefanovic is confident he will reach a deal with the FIA within the next week.

"Definitely, we are waiting for something to happen because the time is very short and the deadline for Bahrain is approaching," he told Reuters. "If you are going to Bahrain you have to be packed by next Wednesday and we think we will be able to reach something by then."
When asked if his outfit could join F1 later in the season, he said: "Technically it's possible but we are going to be in Bahrain. We are not saying it's for sure, but we are looking forward to it."
Stefan GP faced its first major setback this week when it was forced to cancel its first test due to a lack of suitable tyres. However, Stefanovic is hopeful a solution will be found that will see his car run before the start of the season.

"We have been unable to get the Formula One tyres because the FIA and Formula One have a contract stipulating that only the teams that are already in Formula One can get the Bridgestone tyres," Stefanovic said. "We believe the FIA has to release the proper tyres to us for safety reasons. We expect it to happen and we have very good faith that it is going to happen."
He also said that he was on the brink of confirming 1997 champion Jacques Villeneuve as a driver alongside ex-Williams man Kazuki Nakajima.
"It's not happened yet but everything except his signature has been done," Stefanovic said. "Probably in the next two or three days, we will be reaching some sort of an agreement."
He added that he has the support of Bernie Ecclestone in bringing the Serbian team to Formula One.
"I've been involved in engineering in the last five years and I've been interested in Formula One for a long time," he said. "I think Bernie supports everyone and I think he supports us because we are pushing for it. We are working, not talking.

"The impact will be huge and a lot of people in Serbia don't realise that yet. The positive image of Serbia being a part of Formula One is something any country would wish for, so it's a plus one way or another. Also, it's a huge opportunity to get into high-tech business."

source ESPNF1

Powered by Bruno at 14:25 <a class='comment-link' href='https://www.blogger.com/comment/fullpage/post/3117460012717640302/405001530236306693' onclick='javascript:window.open(this.href, "bloggerPopup", "toolbar=0,location=0,statusbar=1,menubar=0,scrollbars=yes,width=640,height=500"); "The cause in question was to allow smaller teams to get into Formula One.
"This is the outcome: two teams will limp into the start of the championship, a third (Stefan Grand Prix) is being pushed into the ring by an invisible hand... and, as for the fourth (US F1), well, you would do better to call on Missing Persons to locate it.
"In the meantime, we have lost two constructors along the way, in the shape of BMW and Toyota, while at Renault, there's not much left other than the name.
